This is a short-term stabilization program for children and adolescents 6-18 years of age. Typical admissions have thoughts of suicide or homicide, or present a danger to themselves or others. WVCP provides free 24-hour assessments to youth and families in a time of need. Assessments will not guarantee admittance. The information is reviewed with our staff psychiatrist and clinical team and a determination is made based on what is in the best interest of the child and family.
The Acute Unit is a highly structured program with 24-hour nursing care, daily psychiatric and therapeutic services and a 1:4 staff to patient ratio. Therapeutic services include individual, family, and group therapy to re-establish the family structure and reduce stress for all members. The program includes educational, recreational, medical, and psychosocial components.
Family involvement is encouraged and emphasized throughout treatment. Visitation and daily phone contact is arranged with the unit clerk. At the time of admission, an individualized plan is initiated which includes family involvement and discharge planning.
